Training: Collecting Features

  • Training: Collecting Features

  • Saturday, February 20 AND Sunday Feb 21, any time between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

  • Gabriel Park in Southwest Portland

Note: the dates for this training event have CHANGED from Feb 13-14.

Once you plan your route to a control, practice noting what features you pass, so you always know where you are on the map. “Okay, there’s the rock pile…next comes the reentrant which I should go down…then I should see a small depression, oh I need to move east a bit…” As you tick off each collecting feature, your position is known on the map.

Orienteering USA has a video demonstrating the technique of Collecting Features. Please watch it!

CROC is offering COVID-safe practice opportunities in February and March, for CROC members only. These are no-cost informal zero-contact events at metropolitan parks, and will give you the chance to practice orienteering skills.

You must pre-register by February 12, by requesting the map and training instructions from Anndy Wiselogle. She will also send you the Start location. On the event day, you may start the course any time between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., being sure to stay away from all orienteers and others in the park. The course closes at 4:00 p.m. Note: No trainer or CROC supervisor will be at the site. As always, stay home if you’re not feeling well. And, this event may be canceled if there are pandemic risks.

Control locations will be marked by orange flagging tape, so don’t look for the usual control bags.

If you want to compare your time to that of others, time yourself and send your results to Anndy, who will post the results the next day.
