Training: The C-A-R Mnemonic
Saturday, March 13, 2021. Any time between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Mt. Tabor Park in Southeast Portland
Use the C-A-R mnemonic to plan each leg. First note the Control you’re going to, then identify the Attack point you’ll use, and then plan your Route to get to the attack point. In other words, plan your approach from the destination backwards. Rather than just heading out, and possibly finding a cliff you should have avoided, you purposefully plan backwards from your destination.
CROC is offering this COVID-safe practice opportunity for CROC members only. This is a no-cost informal zero-contact event that will give you the chance to practice orienteering.
You must pre-register by March 12, by requesting the map and training instructions from Anndy Wiselogle. She will also send you the Start location. On the event day, you may start the course any time between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., being sure to stay away from all orienteers and others in the park. The course closes at 4:00 p.m. Note: No trainer or CROC supervisor will be at the site. As always, stay home if you’re not feeling well. And, this event may be canceled if there are pandemic risks.
Control locations will be marked by orange flagging tape, so don’t look for the usual control bags.
If you want to compare your time to that of others, time yourself and send your results to Anndy, who will post the results the next day.
