EVENT OVERVIEW
The Hoyt Arboretum Practice Orienteering event is a self-start event in which you are totally on your own to start and finish yourself (with help from the UsynligO smartphone app if you want confirmation of your finds and split times). You get to choose a long, medium, or short point-to-point course or a 1- or 2-hour score-O course. Because there are sensitive habitats and plant displays in this park, you must stay on mapped trails, roads, and mowed lawns at all times, and you must avoid going onto private properties (shown with olive green) and prohibited trails (shown with red Xs on the mapped trails). Do not use unmapped trails.
This park is very hilly, and it has an extensive trail network that can be difficult for some people to navigate. If you get lost, look for signs at various trail junctions to see which way to go to return to the park headquarters. You can also ask other park users for directions to the park headquarters.
Many thanks to Virginia Church for geo-referencing the map so that it could be used with the UsynligO smartphone app. Her work was so good that you can use a 10-meter accuracy with UsynligO (instead of the default 15-meter accuracy). To set the accuracy for UsynligO, open the app on your smartphone, select the Arboretum course you want to do, and click the setup icon (gear like icon in the upper right corner of the app screen). In the screen that opens, select 10- or 15-meter accuracy.
When you arrive at the start location while using the UsynligO app, select the event and course you want to do, and click the Start button. After you hear a tone (be sure your phone volume is turned up), you are on the clock and can start looking for your controls. At each control that you find (in the proper order if doing a point-to-point course), you will hear a tune to confirm your find. You can click the Distance or Direction hint buttons to see if you are close to the control site.
There is no water on this very hilly course. Be sure to bring some.
COURSES
Short point-to-point (3.0 km with 160 meters climb and 18 controls)
Medium point-to-point (5.1 km with 275 meters climb and 20 controls)
Long point-to-point (6.0 km with 300 meters climb and 22 controls)
1-hour score-O (60 minutes to find as many controls as possible in any order)
2-hour score-O (120 minutes to find as many controls as possible in any order)
NOTE: This very hilly terrain has courses with 5% climb when 4% is the normal guideline. Do your course with plenty of hydration and look at the extra climb as good training for future hilly events.
