Champoeg State Park

Due to COVID-19, this event has special requirements noted below reduce risk to participants.

To comply with state restrictions, we are making the following changes to this event.

  • This is a fluid and changing situation. This event may be cancelled.

  • If you feel ill, please stay home. Social distancing and the wearing of face masks around others is required.

  • All participation requires pre registration (no event day registration is allowed).

  • The course will remain open to map hikers for 6 days after the event.

  • We’ll have assigned start times to maintain social distancing.

  • We’ll have a minimal number of volunteers, there will be no instructional clinics at the event and no rental equipment (compasses).

  • For this event, we will be using the Sporteering cell phone app in place of control flags for competitive orienteers and the honor system for map hikers (they can also use the Sporteering app) .


General Info

  • Date/Time

    • Assigned starts on event day between 9 am and 2 pm

    • Self-starts for map hikers from event day to Sept 25. While the course is available for a week after the competitive event, map hikers are encouraged to attend on event day for the best experience.

  • Location: Champoeg State Park, see map and driving directions at bottom of page

  • Requirements:

    • Event Day orienteers

      • CROC membership

      • Pre registration (required for start time and map)

      • Sporteering cell phone app to verify your arrival at each control site

      • (Optional) Compass -no rental compasses

    • Map hikers (Sept 20 to Sept 25 participants):

      • CROC membership

      • Pre registration required

      • Map hikers will have an assigned one hour start window to ensure that there are not too many people on the courses at one time. We will confirm your start window after you register.

      • Maps will be emailed to map hikers no later than Sun Sept 20.

      • (Optional) Sporteering cell phone app

      • (Optional) Compass

ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED - COSTS

To receive maps (and pick start times for competitive orienteers) please pre-register. There will not be any registration on event day.

  • Competitive orienteers: pre register by 12 noon Fri, Sept 18

  • Map hikers: pre register by 11 pm Sat, Sept 19

Fees for this event are $5 per entrant (can be a single person or team - we recommend that teams only comprise people who live together to minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus).

Oregon state parks: $5 day use fee or $30 annual pass.


EVENT OVERVIEW

Route choices may have blackberry and stinging nettles. Lower leg protection is recommended on more advanced courses.

TIMES

  • Registration: Online until 11pm Thurs, Sept 17 for the Sept 19 event day. Online until 11pm Saturday, Sept 19 for Sept 20-25.

  • Course starts for competitive orienteers: Assigned between 9 am and 1 pm on event day. You have 3 hours to complete your course.

  • Course starts for map hikers: Select day and one hour start window when you register. Courses are automatically closed when the park is closed.


Courses

  • Yellow: beginner / intermediate, about 3 kM

  • Orange: intermediate, 3.5 km, 15 meters gain

  • Brown: Short advanced, 3.6 km, 15 meters gain

  • Green: Long advanced, 5.9 km, 30 meters gain

Map hikers doing the course after September 19 can get a map in the following ways:

  • PDF file sent to you by email (you must print that map)

  • Printed map sent to you by mail


Results

Results are posted to the Events & Results web page a few days after the event.

  1. From Interstate 5, take the Donald exit (Exit 278).

  2. Follow the signs to Champoeg Park: Drive west on Ehlen Road. Go about 3.6 miles.

  3. Turn right on Case Road. Go about 1.4 miles.

  4. Turn left on Champoeg Road. Go about 0.9 miles.

  5. Turn right into the park at the entrance. Follow the orienteering signs to the event start area.
