Orienteering in Your Own Backyard
- Saturday, June 2, 2018
- 9:00 a.m. Instructions
- Course closes at 11:00
Improving your orienteering skills often means getting in a lot more practice. Sometimes this isn't possible with busy schedules and other things that get in the way. When there isn't a CROC event scheduled or you can't attend, wouldn't it be great to still have an opportunity to train on a map closer to home?
OpenOrienteeringMap is a free, easy online tool for creating street orienteering maps without needing to download anything fancy. With this tool you have the ability to create maps of your neighborhood, around your workplace, or anywhere you can imagine. While not a replacement for the skill and hard work that goes into capturing the detail of an actual orienteering map, this does allow you the opportunity to practice looking at a map and follow a course, all on your own time.
Give it a try yourself! http://oomap.co.uk/
This training will have two parts:
- We will be running a short urban sprint training event using a map created by the OpenOrienteeringMap program so you can see the capabilities and limitations firsthand,
- You will receive a brief "tip sheet" explaining how to create your own maps for future use, and ideas on how to try it yourself.
Location: We will meet on the South Waterfront at Elizabeth Caruthers Park.
3508 SW Moody Avenue, Portland 97239
Time: Earlier than usual to avoid Saturday car traffic: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Please RSVP to Abra McNair (abrastarmcnair at gmail.com) to ensure you have a map and the meeting spot.
