Training Series Info
Build fitness and sharpen your navigating skills (or just have fun) at these training events. Orienteering courses will focus on a particular skill such as close map-reading, remembering what you've seen on the map, and keeping track of where you are. The training series events are only for CROC members. There is no charge.
Laurelhurst Park Map and Compass Skills
There will be three training exercises for this event.
Map Simplification
You start by getting the course map, but before you run the course, you have to draw your own map with only the details you need to complete the course. The exercise helps understand which features are critical to navigation.
Corridor Training
You get a map with everything erased except a corridor around the straight-line route between controls. This exercise will focus on compass skills and pace counting.
No-map Compass Training
You'll get a map of the course to complete...only without the map! You'll get the course map but without the base map, and a control description sheet. This exercise will test your compass and pace counting skills.
You can do any combination of training exercises you wish.
Where to Meet
Meet at the picnic tables near the building at the corner of Laurelhurst Place and Ankeny (North side of the park). See map below.
Start times begin at 10 AM.
Cost: No charge for CROC Members
RSVP
RSVP to Dan Grabski so we'll be sure to have enough maps for you.
More about the training series
Training events will be held monthly in seasonal groups. Watch the events page for the latest information.
The training series is for club members only, who want to improve their orienteering skills, improve fitness and do some socializing. There is no cost for members for these informal events. Results will not be posted, but if you want to keep track of your time, bring a timing device and a scoring sheet will be available.
Creating an event offers valuable training itself! If you'd like to host an event, or have other questions, please contact Virginia Church.
