Course Description: Powell Butte Nature Park recently reopened after extensive renovations. There is now better parking, a great new visitor center, and lots of changes to the trail system. Unchanged features: this old cinder cone still offers interesting terrain, great views, and frequent wildlife sightings. For this next-to-last Zer-Omeet, we will use the meadow area for a 3 K course on a 1:5000 map. Long pants are recommended. (RSVP required).
Beginners: As at all CROC meets, beginners are welcome and highly encouraged to attend! Participants or the meet director will be happy to give you tips for getting started in the sport.
Schedule: Early bird special: map handout will be from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM, so you can get in your orienteering early! The course will close about noon, when everyone has returned.
Getting there: The entrance to the park is from Powell Blvd and SE 162nd Ave. Drive up the hill and park in one of the lots by the visitor center. (Google Map)
Start Location: We will start next to the Mountain Finder at the NE end of the orchard, about a 15-minute walk from the the parking area. At the south end of the visitor center, follow the paved trail marked "Mountain View," going south. You will cross a road, go east, then turn SW. Follow Mountain View around a hairpin turn, then NE to the Mountain Finder and start area.
Post Event: No potluck planned.
Cost: This event is free of charge, but you must RSVP so that we have a map for you.
RSVP: Please contact Virginia Church before Sunday, September 20, so that we can print enough maps for you.
