Deschutes Daze 2021

CROC presents Deschutes Daze, our iconic Pyr-O-clastic adventure, in 2021

We can do this. Deschutes Daze 2021 is On!

Update #3 on July 27, 2021

Note: registered participants received this information by email on July 27. If you did not see it in your inbox, please check your Spam or Promotions folder and add deschutesdaze@croc.org to your approved senders list. If we need to send last minute updates we will send them using this method.

  • The Friday course at Crooked River National Grassland will begin 40 minutes earlier than previously scheduled. The course directors have decided to start earlier because the weather forecast for Friday includes high temperatures in the afternoon. Here is what this means for you

  • Your Friday check-in time was changed. It is now 40 minutes earlier than it was before.

  • Check-in times for other days were not changed

  • Please see https://eventreg.orienteeringusa.org/eventregister/a40/reglist/home/test-deschutes2021 (It says "Start", but for us it means check-in time)

  • Please plan to arrive at the Event Center each day at your check-in time. You can request a different check-in type by replying to this email. Exception: if you are coordinating child-care for your wee ones please feel free to choose your own check-in time

  • On all days except Sunday at Dutchman Flat we will have two parking zones: Regular and Preferred. Regular parking has a longer walk to check-in: 10 minutes for Grassland and Arnold, 3 minutes for Peterson. Preferred parking is for those who want a shorter walk to the Event Center, such as families or anyone wishing to conserve energy for the race. Participants can decide whether to use Preferred or Regular parking, but we do need about half of the cars to be in Regular parking each day. These parking zones will be well marked. Look for signs when you are approaching the event site.

  • We added a course!  Deschutes Daze now has 5 timed races. The new course is an invisible Usynligo course at Shevlin Park that you can do any time from Thursday through Tuesday.  The regular course fee is $10 and the reduced course fee is $5 for Juniors, Parents, Volunteers, and other Honored Participants. Accommodations

Tent Camping

We have reserved a number of regular campsites at Tumalo State Park, lat long coordinates: 44.1284, -121.3315. (Copy/paste these into Google maps or mapping app to get driving directions.) We will not be camping in the group campsite this year.

You can reserve tent camping with your Deschutes Daze registration. We will assign two tents per standard campsite because developed campsites close to the city of Bend are in short supply. We think you will find this still gives plenty of room to enjoy summertime outdoor living and to maintain 2m social distance with your campsite-mates.

If you are coming to Deschutes Daze with an RV, please inquire using the contact form below so we can try to work something out for you.

Other Camping

  • Sisters Creekside Campground has reservable sites in a pleasant setting close to the town of Sisters. 5 sites available on 6/26

  • Pringle Falls Campground in La Pine has reservable sites along the Deschutes River. 3 sites available on 6/26

  • Skull Hollow Campground about 9 miles from Terrebonne has non-reservable sites but is not likely to fill up. It is pleasant but hot during the day. No water

  • Public showers may be available at Juniper Swim & Fitness Center

    800 NE 6th St. Bend, OR 97701 , Tel. (541) 389-7665, call to confirm

  • Up in the mountains, there are several walk-in, low-cost, high-scenery, Forest Service campgrounds located on Century Drive west of Bend (near the Dutchman Flat event). These are first-come, first-served, not reservable (no water)

  • Dispersed camping is allowed in the national forests, for example on the road to Dutchman Flat, in the area around Arnold Ice Cave, or around our new Peterson Ridge map south of Sisters (no water)

Other Lodging

  • There are numerous motel/condo/B & B options in Bend

Social and Other Activities

Saturday July 31 - Barbecue Dinner

  • Outdoor location: Miller’s Landing Park Picnic Shelter

  • Sign up via the registration links above

  • Bring your own lawn blanket and/or chairs if convenient

  • Please maintain 2m social distance at all times

The Deschutes Daze planning team respectfully requests that all banquet attendees over age 12 be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Please use the contact form on the event web site to request a refund for the banquet if you are not vaccinated. All other Deschutes Daze activities are open to all participants regardless of vaccination status. Thank you

Bend!

Between events, you can enjoy the outdoor playground of central Oregon

  • Must-see near Bend is the High Desert Museum and Lava Butte's trails though the flows

  • Explore great mountain biking and hiking trails in or near the Three Sisters wilderness or high desert

  • Rock climb at world-class Smith Rock, 30 minutes north of Bend

  • Great mountain biking at Phil’s Trails and other nearby trailheads

  • Cool off at some nearby back-country lakes

  • Go tubing on the Deschutes River from Riverbend Park to Drake Park

  • Head 2.5 hours south to Crater Lake National Park

The City of Bend offers a wide range of accommodations, great restaurants, and 22 craft breweries (Highest Breweries per Capita in USA)

Souvenir Hat!

hat.jpg

This delightful design by Sue captures the lightness and fun of Deschutes Daze in a form you can take with you and enjoy for years to come. Wear this hat to

  • Let everyone know you are one of the group

  • Protect your head from the sun

  • Remember how we came together and enjoyed this festival, undeterred by this year’s challenges

This will be a limited production run. Include the hat when you register!

A Personal Message

March 13, 2021

We don’t take this lightly. Starting last summer the CROC Board and C-Meets Committee began discussions on how to conduct a safe orienteering meet. We started with the Orienteering USA recommendations and added detailed guidance from the State of Oregon to write our own CROC guidelines for managing events during the pandemic.

We practiced modified event operations by putting on three local orienteering meets last summer and fall. We learned what works and what we needed to improve. By the time we started planning Deschutes Daze 2021 last December we knew we could put on an event like this even if the public health risk stayed as high as it was then.

Our commitment to participants and ourselves as volunteers is to make the health and safety of everyone involved our highest priority. There is no such thing as no risk, but we have taken every step needed to eliminate points of personal contact from our event operations. You can come to Bend this July, spend four days orienteering with us, and not come closer than 2 meters to another person.

No one can know what will happen in our communities between now and our first start on July 30. We hope that most of us will be vaccinated by then and we will feel a sense of relief with this pandemic fading from our every day plans. But even if this does not happen as quickly as we want . . .

We will be in Bend July 30 to August 2, and we hope you will join us there.
