Covid 19 precautions

We are taking additional steps to be sure everyone has a lower risk and enjoyable experience at this event.

Vaccination and masks: CROC volunteers at the event center (where you check in, get your map, and download when finished) are all fully vaccinated. We respectfully request that participants coming into the event center area also be fully vaccinated. Masks send social distancing are required in this area. You know the drill.

Start times: When you register, there will be assigned start times between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM to minimize the number of participants together in the start area.

Beginner clinics

Yay, CROC is back to offering beginner clinics! Brief beginner clinics will be offered at 10:30 and 11:00. You can sign up for these when you register. Masks are required. You can also get up to speed quickly with our CROC Course Basics and Courses and Safety. For even more, check out New To O? for a beginner FAQ and short video.

Event Overview

Mary S Young Park, on the Willamette River, has forest trails on its western, northern, and eastern portions and fields for playing soccer and walking dogs in the center area. Much of the park is relatively flat but the eastern portion near the river has hills, waterfront trails, and a few accessible islands. The park map has been refreshed with updates for trail and vegetation changes. (Soccer fields are marked out of bounds so that we don’t interfere with any games.)

If controls are placed on the islands, and you choose to go find them, you might get your feet wet, hint hint.

We use an electronic scoring and timing system known as “e-punch” Each entry or team needs to have an e-punch stick. This is included with the base registration price. If you have your own e-punch stick, you get a discount on the event fee. Using e-punch is easy. We are glad to show you how it works at the event, and you can learn about e-punch here.

Course and Score-O rules

This score orienteering (Score-O) event will have a short course (45-minute time limit) and a long course (90-minute time limit). Both courses use the same map. You specify your course when you finish doing your course (some people start thinking that they will do one course but when the time limit for the short course occurs they might decide to stay out to find more controls or finish early if tired).

With score-O courses, you try to find as many controls as you like in any order within the time limit for your course. The more points that you accumulate for the controls found, the better your results. If you finish past the time limit for your course, you will lose one point for each fraction of a minute that you are late. If two or more people tie for points, their placings are differentiated by their times, with faster times placed before slower times.

Note:

  • More distant or difficult-to-find controls are often given higher point values than easier controls.

  • If there are controls on the park islands, they will probably have high point values to make up for their difficulty (and possibly for your getting wet feet). If it is too difficult or there is a safety issue in accessing the islands, then controls will not be placed on them.

TIMES

  • Check-in and map pick-up 9:45 AM - 12:45 PM

  • Course starts 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

  • Courses close 2:30 pm (anybody finishing after 2:30 will automatically be scored as overtime (OT) without a placing.

All teams must check out at the finish area before leaving the park, even if the team does not finish the course or returns after the course closes. This is our only way of knowing when everybody has safely finished doing their course.

VOLUNTEERS

All CROC orienteering events are put on by volunteers, and the meet director can almost always use some extra helpers. Please keep in mind:

  • No prior experience is needed for many of the tasks

  • You can help out AND still run your course of choice

Typical ways to assist are: helping with starts and finishes, checking in folks at registration, giving brief beginner clinics, and picking up control flags after the course closes.

Please contact the event director at the email link just below if you'd like to volunteer at this event. For more details, see the Get Involved pages.
